When a golf article is empty of data: the analysis system can only say 'insufficient information'

In the middle of the 2026 season, a glossy golf article was submitted to a technical analysis desk. The result was shocking: every section — from Strokes Gained to OWGR, from injury risk to the larger tour landscape — displayed 'N/A – insufficient information.' When a sports article contains no data at all, readers face a question: are we reading news or reading a rhythmic essay? In Vietnamese golf, this is no longer rare. Based on my experience following many Asian golf seasons, the lack of data does not make an article neutral; it makes it disconnected. Golf has moved past its 'rich man's sport' phase. Vietnam now has more than 100 golf courses, junior events organised by the VGA across many provinces, and talented young amateurs who know about Asia-Pacific qualifying. But specialised media still write in an emotional, swing-storytelling style. When articles lack data, modern analytic engines are forced to stop. Without SG Off the Tee, driving advantage cannot be quantified. Without SG Approach, praise of approach shots is only repetition of the past. Without SG Putting, the story on the green goes nowhere. And without an OWGR ranking, we cannot see where a golfer stands on his own path. The analysis output in our possession shows a full matrix of empty fields. No concrete event, no golfer name, no season large enough to rely on. This leads to an important paradox: many in the media believe numbers will 'kill' emotion in sport. The reverse is closer to truth. When numbers disappear, emotion also dies — it is replaced by formulaic words such as 'impressive display' or 'tremendous effort' repeated without any need for verification. Sports journalists tell stories with facts. Without facts, they try to tell stories with a compass of pain. But in an article where no shot is measured, pain becomes decoration. The lesson for Vietnamese golf is not about whether writing is good or bad; it is about starting a minimal-data movement. Demand that every tournament report includes three quotable numbers: under-par score, number of birdies, number of putts in the final round. Once that happens, analysis will stop saying 'insufficient information.' The open question is whether Vietnamese sports journalism can wait long enough for a new generation of writers — people who understand that to grow great golfers, we must first teach the people holding the pen how to read a scoreboard. Or will we continue to raise beautiful articles with zero statistics? The choice belongs to the writers.
